Slate is a metamorphic rock that consists of hard texture. It can easily split into thin layers. The texture is brittle. It can crack easily. The thickness of the thin slabs range from 8 to 14mm. These slabs are strong and durable to a great amount. The metamorphic rock is mostly utilized for various purposes including wall finishes, roofing, shelves and paving. The slate is originally obtained from shale-type sedimentary rock that is made up of clay. The clay is derived from low grade regional metamorphism.
This process of metamorphic results in a foliated rock. Here, the foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering. Slates are usually available in various forms and colors. The colors commonly available include, black, pink, brown, copper, pink, earthy brown, yellow, black, beige, purple and greenish gray.
When it comes to manufacturing slates, the sizes vary. The sizes can be as small as 6”x6” or 3”x9” and up to 24”x24” or 24”x18”. You can easily find a variety of shapes when it comes to slates including triangle, square, rectangle, irregular and several custom made shapes.
